Baby on Board, Frances Sacco

Baby on Board, Frances Sacco

I will share my pregnancy and baby experiences, some of which I have been well prepared for and others that come out of the blue.

Solid Food

19/01/2010

First then there was confusion in Abbie's little eyes, then they opened wide in amazement, then her mouth was open again and her chubby little hand reached for the spoon.

Thus was the reaction to her first taste of solids.

When I say solids, I guess I mean a tasteless slush made out of ground rice and breast milk, but we all have to start somewhere.

We're back

5/12/2009

How do I start my first entry in two and a half months?

So much has happened in that time.

We've had (correction, Abbie's had) several interstate visitors, Abbie had her first flight to Sydney and back, had her first cold and started to learn about her hands and feet while I've discovered catch-up television on the ABC and Channel 10's websites.

That last one may.... more »

Some days are better than others

25/09/2009

Before Abbie's arrival people told me parenting would be a full time job.

It's not that I didn't believe them - it's just that I had no idea how full time.

I had visions of actually having a clean house (something I rarely achieved when I was in paid work full time and played hockey) and messing around with my photographs, and getting some freelance work.

My body

18/09/2009

If the nine months to August 10 were a tenancy, Abbie would not be getting her bond back.

It was one of the weirdest things about the whole birth experience looking in the mirror the day after at this stranger.

It was my face (with what looked suspiciously like the beginning of an extra chin) but the rest was entirely unfamiliar.

My belly looked as though I was.... more »

Baby talk

13/09/2009

Babies are noisy creatures.

And I don't just mean the crying that everyone expects.

They grunt snort and snuffle in their cribs so that you would think they couldn't possibly still be asleep, but when you get up to check they're laying there peacefully.

Abbie is starting to display the beginnings of language too.

Every now and then we hear a coo mixed in.... more »

Babies 101

5/09/2009

Coming from a large family - there are 20 in my generation if you count my cousins from both sides and the next generation is well under way, so I have some previous experience with babies.

You know - the kind you can give back to their parents when they cry.

While it's nowhere near the same as being a parent, I already knew a few useful things about babies.

Breast feeding

29/08/2009

I'm sitting at my computer typing one-handed as I try to settle a slightly windy baby who wants to sleep, but really needs to burp first.

Abigail has been out in the world for 19 days and already I can't imagine life without her.

Some things have come surprisingly easily, such as dealing with sick and poo - something I mind a lot less than I thought I would.

Labour

19/08/2009

A day over my due date and I was pretty much over the whole pregnant thing.

I hadn't slept much the night before and I was feeling sore and sorry for myself, unable to move too much and too tired to get anything done.

By the afternoon I was getting a couple of twinges, which made me pretty happy, but I didn't want to get ahead of myself seeing as how I'd had some in.... more »
