Ignorance cannot be defence for water use

02/Sep/2010

Comments:

AFTER reading your article about the breaching of water restrictions (Weekender, August 19), I just had to make a comment.

How can there be nearly 650 warnings and only four fines? These people who ignore bans will just water at a different time of the day or night to avoid detection.

This is our second year of winter bans, so ignorance cannot be used as a defence.

These would be the same people who ignore the summer restrictions as well.

It is time that the water authority got serious.

No more warnings, just fines, and make the fines a deterrent. A fine of $100 is a joke.

When you consider the price of houses, $100 is a small price to pay for a nice garden.

The rangers also need to get out more, especially at night, to catch these water wasters.
