ECU Joondalup claimed the inaugural Joondalup Charity Shield after beating amateur club Joondalup United 2-1.

Organisers said the day was a success and money raised will be donated to Joondalup Hospital’s children’s and maternity wards.

United took the lead on 70 minutes through 17-year-old Michael Kenny after some good work down the left from striker Lee Jones.

ECU equalised four minutes laterthrough a deflected Joseph Lado strike and on 88 minutes ECU defender Josh Brooks smashed home a 20m free kick to seal a win for the students.

The match was organised to coincide with United’s 10th anniversary and organisers hope to make it an annual event.

United began life in the Metropolitan League’s Division 4 in 2000 and celebrated promotion in both of its first two seasons.

In 2007, they secured promotion to the Premier League after a 13-game unbeaten run and early in the 2008 season, they were ladder leaders.

United ended up mid-table that season but it was a respectable debut in the top flight and last year the club cemented its place.

A core group of individuals has worked hard behind the scenes to keep the club growing during its first decade.

Robin Kenchington was an inaugural player and served on the committee, while Stephen Martin and Chris Mallon – teenagers when the club began – are still involved this year.

Other members, including Michael Burgess, Rudy Proctor and recently- elected president John Stone, have been involved for many years.

Contact Bill Byrne (0439 953 957) or president John Stone (0410 275 586) for more information or to join the club.
